Volunteered With U-M Health in the Past? You're in the Right Place.
General volunteers (students and community members) can skip semesters and later return to volunteer. If you have been on a leave of absence for less than one year, complete a Return-to-Service Application found on the volunteer portal under the “Applications” tab. If you have been inactive for more than a year, choose General Volunteer Application from the “Applications” tab.
Former pre-assigned/pre-approved volunteers wishing to return to service must complete a new Pre-assigned Volunteer Application found on the volunteer portal under the “Applications” tab.
If you have never before volunteered at U-M Health visit the New Volunteers page.
The "Grace Period" is held prior to the start of a new session (semester/term) for current and returning volunteers to change their placements and/or schedules. Grace Period appointments are offered 3 times per year, typically for a 3-week period before each new session (April, August, December).
Returning college and graduate student volunteers must schedule a Grace Period appointment for the upcoming session (semester/term) in order to resume volunteering. Students must have a confirmed class schedule available for their appointment.
Current and returning community volunteers (non-students) may remain in their scheduled placements indefinitely, pending availability of placements. Those wishing to change their placement or schedule must schedule a Grace Period appointment in order to do so. Your Grace Period appointment can be conducted in person, online, or by phone.
Each year, volunteers continuing their service must complete an Annual Update to renew their credentials. Your update should be completed within 30 days prior to your ID badge’s expiration (noted on the front of your Volunteer ID badge).
You will receive a reminder email with instructions for renewing your credentials via the Volunteer Portal.
The Annual Update includes:
- Renewing your ID Badge
- Completing another health screening
- Criminal Record Check
- Signing the Code of Conduct Attestation
- Completing the Orientation refresher
- Updating personal information (addresses, emergency contacts, etc.)
- Signing the Memorandum of Understanding
